OCT's MTA 2009 Award Wins

Old Courthouse Theatre Received 12 Nominations for Metrolina Theatre Awards!

Cabarrus County's only community theatre, Old Courthouse Theatre, competed in the Regional-South category at the 2009 Metrolina Theatre Association Awards (MTA) and received 12 nominations from the two productions. Theatre companies which are members of the MTA and not in the Charlotte city limits are only allowed to submit two plays to be judged. The area for the regional categories runs from Hickory and Newton-Conover all the way to Rock Hill and Fort Mill in South Carolina.

This past year OCT submitted the shows “1940's Radio Hour” and “Benedictions”. The nominations they garnered were: 1940's Radio Hour; best production, best director- Scot Slusarick, best lead actress-Kim Baysinger, best supporting actress-Sarah Slusarick, best costumes-Kim Baysinger, and best set design-Scot Slusarick.

For the production Benedictions the nominated categories were; best production, best director-Phil Taylor, best lead actress-Elyse Williams, best lead actor-Jonathan Ewart, best supporting actress-Becky Porter, and best supporting actor-Kevin Campbell.

Old Courthouse Theatre took home six of these prestigious awards. Kim Baysinger took home the award for best costume design. The other award winners were: Phil Taylor, Elyse Williams, Jonathan Ewart and Becky Porter. Benedictions also was given the award for best production.

Early in OCT’s history, the theatre was well known throughout the area and the entire state of North Carolina for producing outstanding productions. Several times Old Courthouse Theatre won the top honor awarded by the North Carolina Theatre Conference for one-act plays. “We are excited that our work is once again being recognized by other theatre organizations for our excellence” says Mark Bargeloh, current OCT Board President. “Our patrons have always appreciated our shows and now we have the recognition of our peers throughout the Metrolina area. Our hope is that many more people will realize that there is outstanding local talent giving live performances of some of the most challenging and exciting stage shows available, and that they will come out and help keep the arts alive in Cabarrus County .”
